With three of his handicaps entries now out of the festival, the latest Cheltenham odds are still in favour of owner JP McManus. He said his team wasn't happy about how the cross-channel handicapper dealt with De Name Escapes Me, Ivanovich Gorbatov and Jezki in relation to the other Irish geldings.
Former victor of the Triumph Hurdle Ivanovich Gorbatov had been one of the entries for the County Hurdle while Jezki, former champion of the Champion Hurdle, would have been a participant in the County or Coral Cup. De Name Escapes Me was initially scheduled to participate in the Coral Cup as well. Without them, Buveur D’Air, the current Champion Hurdler, will lead McManus’ team in the Cheltenham Festival.
With three of his runners absent from his team, McManus is still the leading candidate for the most successful owner, beating his competitor Michael O’Leary. The award was first given these last two years, wherein O’Leary won seven times in 2018. However, though he has a total of 26 wins, it is not sufficient compared to McManus’ record who has 54 wins, making McManus the most successful owner in the history of the Cheltenham Festival races.
McManus still holds a 4-7 shot at being the most successful owner in a couple of ante-post lists in some ante-post lists with other ante-post favourites such as Defi Du Seuil and Champ.
